Councillor’s Communique : APRIL 2004 - Issue # 77

NEW DISTRICT BOUNDARIES

Earlier this year, a directive was issued by the NS Utility and Review Board requesting HRM for an alternate 23 seat Council scenario attempting to meet an equalized +/- 10% population ratio per district criteria. Their decision has resulted in some modifications to practically all of the districts.

In particular to District 3, the western boundaries will be moving closer to Metro whereas the eastern boundary will remain the same. Primarily, District 3 will be expanding to include the Little Salmon River subdivision, Ross Road, Westmount Plains, Coleridge Estates, Cherry Brook Road, Lake Loon Road, MacLaughlin Road, Westphal Trailer Park and the rest of Lake Major & Crane Hill.

These boundaries will be in effect for the October 16th, 2004 General Municipal Elections. Any questions as to how this might apply to any impact any particular situation may be referred to HRM Solicitors at 490-4229 or 490-4226.

There will also be a name change to reflect this adjustment. Effective as of November 2nd, 2004, the new District 3 will be referred to as Preston - Lawrencetown - Chezzetcook, instead of Preston - Porters Lake. This new name reflects the historical Halifax British Colony land grants that formed the original Preston & Laurence ‘Townships’ &  the French Acadian Chezzetcook settlements that encompass this entire area.

MARINE RIDERS ATV CLUB

Local Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) users have formed an association to lobby for improvements to the  proposed provincial OHV legislation and to help create and improve shared access to local trails for OHV use.

The main objective would be to establish trail links with the communities of Musquodoboit Harbour, the Chezzetcooks, Porters Lake and Lake Echo. Membership is $25 which includes dual membership with the ATV Association of NS (ATVANS).

Anyone interested in joining this ATV club ought to contact Marine Riders c/o Scott & Sara MacInnis, Site 23, Box 0, Gaetz Brook, HRM, NS, B0J 1N0.  Telephone 827-5577 or cell 476-8967 or 476-1502 and by e-mail at mhjsc@accesswave.ca .

QUICKER STREETLIGHT REPAIRS

NS Power work crews have been very busy since Hurricane Juan and the recent winter storms to respond to all of those non-working streetlights. Now the NS Power's website enables you to report various problems with street-lighting to them directly. Go to:

www.nspower.ca/YourHome/Streetlights/streetLightReport.htm

or it can be accessed from their homepage at www.nspower.ca/ by clicking on the link entitled "Streetlight Problems?"

However; lighting along Hwy #107 and its interchanges should be reported to the NS DoT&PW - Chezzetcook Depot ( 827-2544) who will forward it through to NS Power who is under contract to the Province.

If you have any concerns, please contact me directly. I have been accumulating a list of faulty lights as well as requests for new lighting that will be forwarded to NS Power this Spring.

Sincerely,

Councillor  David  Hendsbee
