EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS

Emergency Preparedness (EP) Week is May 2nd - 8th. Everyone should be prepared and able to take care of themselves for a 72 hour period from any potential harm caused by a significant weather event or incident.

The Eastern Shore area from Cole Harbour to Ship Harbour has established a local Joint Emergency Management Team (ES-JEM) to prepare our communities. ES-JEM motto is "Organizing to Respond". On Saturday morning, May 8th, 10 AM - 1 PM, the fourth annual ‘JEM Jamboree' will be at the Porters Lake Atlantic Superstore parking lot. Their plan is to continue promoting its efforts in  emergency preparedness, training, and community readiness for any local emergency. Volunteers are needed !

Please call  ES-JEM at 827-5414 or visit online at:

BIKE WEEK : MAY 28th - JUNE 6th

Bike Week is a celebration of all forms of cycling in HRM, and provides lots of unique opportunities for residents to get out for a spin. There will be plenty of events organized by local individuals and groups to encourage bicycling for sport, recreation, and  active transportation.

For more details about HRM Bike Week, go to: www.halifax.ca/bikeweek/index.html and for more general information about safe cycling throughout our municipality:   www.halifax.ca/cycling/index.html

NEW SCHOOL & REC CENTRE

At a public meeting on April 22nd, floor plans and conceptual drawings for the new Lakeview School and District Recreation Centre were presented. This new community facility will be built as an addition / enhancement to the new elementary school. Both facilities are scheduled to be open for use in September 2011. Members of the public were invited to submit ideas and suggestions for recreation programs and services that they would like to have offered at the new facility.  Also there is an appeal for volunteers to join the management / advisory board for the new  community district centre. This project is moving forward at this time because of the unique opportunity to combine it with a new school, saving millions of dollars over the cost of constructing a stand-alone facility. Funding for the recreation facility add-on ($3.3 Million) has been approved by HRM Council and consists of 50% funding from HRM Capital Budget ($1.65 M), and the remainder will be recovered by a combination of an area rate tax levy and some community fundraising. As a result, the former District 3 Capital Area Rate will be reinstated at a proposed rate of no more than $24.00 per $100,000 of assessment which was charged on property tax bills in the District from 1999 to 2005.

Back then, the following district projects were funded from our local area rate:
Lake Echo Community Centre Upgrades; Chezzetcook Fire Station Elevator Tower; Chezzetcook Fire Station Septic Field; Lawrencetown Community Centre Upgrades; Kinap Athletic / Canoe Club Upgrades; Head Chezzetcook School Conversion; Grand Desert / Ste. Therese Ctr Conversion; East Preston Recreation Centre Upgrades; and Seaforth Hall Renovations.

A ten year debenture will finance the project but the local area rate will only be required for an estimated 5 to 8 year period or less. The duration and amount of the area tax rate will depend upon the size of a philanthropic gift that is anticipated towards this community project.

More details will be available at :http://lakeview.ednet.ns.ca/ or www.halifax.ca/facilities/CFMP/CurrentStudies.html#PortersLake

BUSY BEE PERMITTED TO EXPAND

At the Public Hearing of the Marine Drive, Valley & Canal Community Council on Thursday, April 1st at the Lake Echo Community Centre; Busy-Bee Day Care was granted its request to re-zone its adjacent property to "commercial status" in order to allow it to enlarge its operations. In my last month's newsletter there was a mistake in this notice. The subject title was correct but the intended text content was erroneously omitted. My apologies for that oversight.

Sincerely,

Councillor  David  Hendsbee
