SNOW & WINTER MAINTENANCE

The Nova Scotia Dept. of Transportation & Infrastructure Renewal ( NSDTIR) does most of the snow removal and ice control road maintenance services in District 3. Our local NS Highway Depot in Chezzetcook is at 827-2544. But the communities of North Preston, Westphal, Cole Harbour, and all of the subdivision streets in the West & Upper Lawrencetown area, are done under the auspices of HRM. If you have any concerns about our Snow and Ice Control winter road maintenance, please call the HRM Contact Centre at 490-4000. Drivers can get up-to-date road conditions across Nova Scotia by calling the SNOW-line: 1-800-307-SNOW (7669) or 511 or in HRM at 424-3933 or on-line at www.gov.ns.ca/tran and click on the Road & Weather Report Icon Button. The SNOW-line is updated regularly at 7 AM; 1 PM; and 5 PM or more frequently in case of a major storm event. For on-line info about HRM Winter Road Maintenance go to: www.halifax.ca/snow/index.html

Be sure to have proper tires on and emergency supplies on hand in your vehicle. Please drive carefully this winter

TRANSIT CHANGES COMING: FEB.1st

As a result of the citizens input on the community transit surveys, there will be some important service time adjustments coming into effective on Monday, February 1st. Patrons will see earlier and later service runs coming to and from our area. The surveys of June & September 2009, helped to determine what times the bus ought to be running. The schedule chosen was an alteration of a couple of options in order to best optimize connections in both directions at the Portland Hills terminal. For more details on the schedule, please refer to

PROPER DISPOSAL OF ASHES

HRM Fire & Emergency Service wants to remind all citizens that numerous fires occur every year within HRM due to the improper disposal of ashes from fuel burning appliances such as wood stoves, fire places, pellet stoves and wood furnaces. Never discard ashes into your green bin or other plastic containers, or cardboard boxes. Ashes should be placed in a metal can with a tight fitting lid and stored outside the home, away from structures and other combustibles. Ashes can smoulder for several days and re-ignite. For more helpful information about fireplaces, wood stoves and fire safety throughout the year, contact the Halifax Regional Fire & Emergency division of Fire Prevention at 490-5546 or www.halifax.ca/fire

Keep yourself warm and safe this season.

NEW COMPONENT HOME PARK ?

There will be a second public information meeting about a re-zoning request to allow for a proposed component home community park in the Lake Echo area that would be adjacent to the existing mobile home parks. This is a follow-up meeting from last year when several questions were raised and points of clarifications were sought about its water services, on-site combined clustered septic systems, and a traffic impact study was requested. This meeting will be held at the Lake Echo Community Centre on Thursday, January 14th at 7:00 PM. ( Storm date: Thursday, January 21st ).

NEW SUBDIVISION IN ROSS ROAD

There will be a public information meeting to garner public opinion about a new proposed subdivision in the Ross Road / Cole Harbour area. The concept plan for Case # 01290 (an application by Terrain Group on behalf of Geldart Property Developments Ltd.) is a hydrid classic open space subdivision design that meets the aims and objectives of the recently adopted HRM Regional Plan. This meeting will be held at the Ross Road School cafeteria on Monday, January 18th at 7:00 PM. ( Storm date: Monday, January 25th ).
