REDUCED SPEED LIMIT ADVISORY

Speeding along the West Porters Lake Road has been an ongoing and increasing problem. For many years there has been an outcry for a speed reduction. This local collector road provides access to Hwy #7, #107, & #207. The speed limit had been 80 kms along this corridor. Earlier this year, a few concerned residents went door-to-door seeking support onto a petition. A vast majority of folks along this area were in support of this plea for a speed adjustment. This petition was presented to the former Eastern Shore MLA - Bill Dooks and Minister of Transportation - Brooke Taylor for their attention and action. The Province reviewed this information and other data and decided that a reduction in the speed limit was warranted. The NS Traffic Authority would have taken into account many factors but the increasing population growth and number of egress points along this roadway would have impacted their decision to adjust the speed. Now the speed limit is 60 kms (north of Exit 19) and 70 kms (south of Exit 19). I believe they have acted prudently and justifiably. Personally, I endorse this effort and give it my moral support.  Hopefully, all affected residents and motorists will be mindful of this change and act responsibly by reducing their own speed while driving through the area. Normally drivers are asked to drive accordingly to the weather and road conditions and be respective of posted speed limits. At times, such conditions may warrant even slower driving speeds. Since this was only a recent speed limit change, I have asked the RCMP to exercise some discretion in regards to issuing tickets. Perhaps a grace period is needed to give adequate notice and fair warning to all. So please lighten up on the accelerator. OK ?

LITTER CONCERNS OVER FLYERS

Over the past number of years, several constituents have raised questions about the delivery of community newspapers and advertising flyers. The newspaper publishers and flyer distributors would like to answer any questions or concerns that you may have. The print media industry have taken many initiatives to ensure environmental responsibility. They have adopted a "Flyer Delivery Best Practice" to better serve their customer needs. All carriers are instructed on, and provided with ongoing education, regarding proper delivery methods. These include delivery to the customer's property (at least 33 feet from road centre), to the door, mailbox or tube. A delivery database is maintained and customers wishing to cease delivery have their homes flagged and instruction sent to the carrier to stop delivery. If the carrier sees that the householder has not collected the product after one week's delivery, distribution to the household is stopped and any uncollected product is normally removed. Contact information is provided in every flyer jacket/community paper or plastic sleeve enabling customers to start or stop flyer delivery, to contact publishers with delivery concerns, or to request a delivery tube to be installed at no cost. Newspaper staff or independent-contractors constantly monitor routes to determine that flyers are properly delivered. If you would like to stop delivery of the Chronicle Herald flyer package, please call 426-2811 (Ext. 3350) with your complete civic address and telephone number. Alternatively, constituents may prefer to email at
emc@herald.ca  or by fax at 426-0422.  In the meantime, please don't leave them in the ditches. It is not very scenic for our area.

LAWRENCETOWN FINAL PAVING

Finally, the last section of "J"-Class subdivision gravelled streets in the Lawrencetown area will be paved. The next set of streets are in the Carter & Romans and Beach Breeze area. Those streets being; Carmen Drive extension, Doherty Drive extension, Lillian Drive, Glenn Drive, Jan Marie Drive, George Cyril Drive, Craig Allen Drive, Bellefontaine Court, Cathy Court, Sonia Drive and Westview Drive.  NS Tender # 60137963 for Phase 4 was advertised in mid-July. The work is expected to be done by the end of October. Since 2006, thirty subdivision streets will have been paved throughout Lawrencetown. We need to personally thank and acknowledge the great effort of  the former Eastern Shore MLA - Bill Dooks. None of this would have been possible it it were not for his dedicated commitment. I can only hope that the new MLA, Mr. Sydney Prest will have the same success as his predecessor did in addressing our local roads. Also a tender is expected to be called soon to address some of the forty plus gravelled streets in Porters Lake.

Sincerely,

Councillor  David  Hendsbee
