FUTURE TRANSIT ON-LINE SURVEY

Metro Transit is in the process of developing a new 5 year strategic operations plan for transit services in HRM. As a component of this ongoing process, an on-line trip diary survey and campaign entitled "Which Way HRM ?" has just been launched and will run until Friday, March 6th. Transit passengers and citizens alike are being asked to provide their feedback on what their daily trip patterns are in and around HRM, to help shape the future of public transit.

Everyone who completes a Metro Transit's on-line trip diary survey will be automatically entered in a contest to win one of 5 iPod Nanos, gift certificates or Metro Transit passes! Contest details are available on -line.

To fill out the survey, just go to
www.hrmlistens.com and follow the on-screen instructions; or check for the on-line survey banner on the bottom of the Metro Transit Home Page at www.halifax.ca/metrotransit.

Look for the "Which Way, HRM ?" advertising bus boards, transit shelter posters and flyers in your household mail or call the HRM Call Centre at 490-4000 for more details.

DOG REGISTRATION DISCOUNT

There are a number of HRM residents that do not comply with our dog licensing provisions. Last year, HRM Council approved a special rate for early registration of dog licenses that would result in an increased compliance with the licensing component of By-law A-300 : Respecting Animals and Responsible Pet Ownership.

Due to the success of that 2008 Licensing Strategy, it is being offered again to HRM dog owners at a special rate of $10.00 for the period of February 1st to April 30th, 2009. After this time frame has passed, it will cost you much more to register your dog.

CELL PHONE - FREE LANDFILLS

Nova Scotia became the first province in Canada to participate in a nation-wide initiative to recycle cell phones. Recycle My Cell is a new web-based program launched by the wireless industry, which allows users to properly dispose of their cell phones and other wireless devices - regardless of carrier, brand, or condition.

This free program is organized by the Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association in conjunction with cell phone service providers, manufacturers and recycling companies. Unwanted cell phones can be dropped off at or mailed to ( free of charge ) designated locations.

For more information about the program, visit the Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association’s website
www.cwta.ca . So let’s cull those cells !

MORE ELECTRONICS RECYCLING

As of February 1st, the Atlantic Canada Electronic Stewardship ( ACES ) Program has expanded to include additional electronic products that will be banned from Nova Scotia’s landfills, such as portable, vehicle and home audio/video systems and non-cellular telephones.

Environmental Handling Fees ( EHF ) are charged on all new products when purchased ( for example, the EHF for a non-cellular telephone is $0.85 ) and are formulated to reflect the true cost of collection, transportation and responsible recycling.

All residents and businesses can recycle their unwanted electronics free of charge through a designated drop-off centre. For more information about the program, including a list of drop-off centres, please phone 1-(877)-774-3260 or on-line at the ACES Web-site :
