25th AFRICAN HERITAGE MONTH

February 2009 will mark the 25th year Nova Scotians have celebrated African Heritage Month in this province. To commemorate this major milestone in our collective history the Office of African Nova Scotian Affairs (ANSA) will produce an events brochure, and in recognition of the Black History Month Association’s silver anniversary, who helped shape the celebration of African Heritage Month in Nova Scotia, a commemorative poster. Last year marked the formation of the African Heritage Month Information Network - a partnership of community organizations gathered to help ensure the promotion and awareness of events and activities in HRM and province wide. Be sure to check out the ANSA website's African Heritage Month calendar for more program details on upcoming events: www.gov.ns.ca/ansa/AHMEvents09.asp

HRM will be having its fourth annual Girls Soar Physical Activity Week (GSPAW). This initiative will be taking place during the week of February 16-20th. During this week the provincial government, the municipal government, not-for-profits and private businesses partner to offer girls in HRM between the ages of 9-18 free opportunities to be physically active and explore the types of physical activity opportunities they enjoy. This year, HRM Community Recreation, Halifax Regional School Board, Province of Nova Scotia, and the YWCA have already signed on as part of this program with many private organizations also coming on side. ROAD PAVING IN PORTERS LAKE

Eastern Shore MLA & I will be conducting a public meeting on Saturday, February 21st at 2 PM at the Lakeview School to discuss the possibility of paving the local gravel sub-division streets in the Porters Lake area.

PROPER DISPOSAL OF ASHES

HRM Fire & Emergency Service wants to remind citizens that numerous fires occur every year within HRM due to the improper disposal of ashes from fuel burning appliances such as wood stoves, fire places, pellet stoves and wood furnaces. Never discard ashes into your green bin or other plastic container, or cardboard boxes. Ashes should be placed in a metal can with a tight fitting lid and stored outside the home, away from structures and other combustibles. Ashes can smoulder for several days and reignite. For more information about fireplace and woodstove safety and fire safety throughout the year, contact the Halifax Regional Fire & Emergency division of Fire Prevention at 490-5546 or www.halifax.ca/fire
