H.R.M. District 3 Councillor’s Communiqué
October 2008 - Issue # 131

STRATEGIC PARK ACQUISITIONS

HRM is in the final stages of acquiring various strategic parkland sites throughout the District:

First of all, we have secured permission from the province to have early right of access to start monitoring and managing the Sandy Point Beach area of Porter's Lake by Hwy. #107.  It is my hope to acquire the adjacent property as well to create a lakefront commons.

Secondly, the old Irving Gas Stations site in Lake Echo is about to be purchased after it has passed all environmental tests.  This property is highly used for its beach area and it will further enhance the adjacent municipality facilities.  I will be striking up an ad-hoc planning committee to develop a concept plant to transform that property into a community lakefront park.

Thirdly, HRM is about to acquire the lands next to the old schoolhouse in cherry Brook - Lake Loon. this property will augment the current HRM land holdings there.  It is expected that the old school will have to be demolished for safety sake.  The existing playground will be relocated to a safer place away from the roadway as well.  Also, there are plans from the Preston Area Trails Association to utilize this site as a local community part and as a walking trailhead parking lot.  Securing this property will also ensure the potential for future recreational needs of that community.

Fourthly, there will be some more properties acquired along the Trans-Canada Trail rail bed corridor in Lawrencetown to enhance access and parking.  I have another request to buy certain parcels in the Ross Road and Grand Desert areas for local park sites too.

BURNING SEASON ONCE AGAIN

As of October 15th (weather permitting) and whether or not the NS Forest Weather Index (FWI) is at a low to moderate reading, the Open-Air Burning Season outside the HRM Urban No-Burn Zone may be allowed whereby Provincial Burning Permits will not be necessary.

Under our current Open-air Burning Bylaw O-103: Sections 12(i) and 13 (h), the burning of brush can be done 7 days a week from 8:00 AM to 9:00 PM and all fires must be completely extinguished by 11:00 PM.  HRM Fire Permits (at no charge) are still needed but the local fire departments still have the right to limit the number of municipal permits issued.

For the latest FWI conditions, please visit:

Be careful if you want to burn!
