COMMUNITY STATUS REPORTERS

Your Eastern Shore Joint Emergency Management Team ( ESJEM ), from Cole Harbour to Ship Harbour, is looking for volunteers to become Community Status Reporters ( CSR ). If there should ever be more significant weather events or any other community-wide emergency crisis, CSR’s will be providing first hand, up-to-date details on local conditions ( roads / power outages / flooding, etc.) within their immediate neighbourhood and/or community. CSR’s will receive an automated phone message which will ask them to call ESJEM back and report in on the local conditions or inform them of any immediate needs they are aware of in their area. The ESJEM-CSR system will be a lead way for the preparation of any community-led organizational response to non-emergency needs during a sustained period of crisis. With a slogan of ‘Organizing to Respond’ and in the spirit of being prepared, ESJEM proposes to run annual Community Status Reporting practise exercises. These will be simply practise phone calls without the stress of being in a real life crisis and it allow ESJEM to test their alert system and assess their readiness capabilities. ESJEM will provide you with the pertinent materials if you wish to help out with this initiative. For further enquires or need any more information, please contact ESJEM at 827-5414. ESJEM meets the first Wednesday of every month at 7 pm in the Eastern Shore Ground Search and Rescue building at # 5688 - Hwy # 7, Head of Chezzetcook. All are welcome.

ON-LINE STREETLIGHT OUTAGES

You can now report any streetlight outages on-line. NS Power's website enables you to alert them directly of any safety and/or operational problems about street lighting. www.nspower.ca/customer_service/residential/street.shtml. So why be left out in the dark anymore ?

BURNING SEASON ONCE AGAIN

As of October 16th (weather permitting) and whether or not the NS Forest Weather Index (FWI) is at a low to moderate reading, the Open-Air Burning Season outside the HRM Urban No-Burn Zone may be allowed whereby Provincial Burning Permits will not be necessary. Under our Open-Air Burning Bylaw O-103: Sections 12 (i) & 13 (h), the burning of brush can be done 7 days a week from 8:00 AM to 9:00 PM and all fires must be completely extinguished by 11:00 PM. HRM Fire Permits ( at no charge ) are still needed but the local fire departments still has the right to limit the number of municipal permits issued. For the latest FWI conditions, go to:

Now with Phase 2 of this bulk paving program underway; future phases are being planned that should address all of the remaining subdivision streets in the greater Lawrencetown area that want to be paved. Once again, I want to personally thank and publicly acknowledge the great efforts of the Eastern Shore MLA - the Hon.
