CAMP COURAGE FOR GIRLS

HRM Fire & Emergency Services and the First Responders Society will be conducting a Career Exposure & Experience Adventure for females ages 15 - 19. The purpose of “CAMP COURAGE” is to introduce young women to non-traditional public service careers such as paramedics, police officers and fire fighters. The dates of Camp Courage is from Sunday, July 29th to Saturday, August 4th. The Camp will be conducted at the HRM Fire Stations at Knightsridge in Clayton Park, Halifax and Lakeside in Timberlea. This Camp is aimed at providing information, education, inspiration and opportunities to experience the physical demands so the participants will have a better appreciation of what it takes to work in these roles. Ultimately, the goal is to instill greater self-esteem with the sense of empowerment and confidence in young girls. There is no cost or entry fee for this Camp. Absolutely 100% Free ! Applicants must write an essay on one of two topics : A) How can they improve someone else’s life that is less fortunate ?; or B ) How can they improve their community ? It must be taken into account that no monetary resources can be used to pay for what they have suggested, therefore they must do what they say in their essay. The only limitation ( except for having no cash ) is their own imagination. The Essay Deadline is May 31, 2007. Once selected you must do what you say in your essay in lieu of payment for camp registration. EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS

As an update from my past Communiques - June 2004 - Issue # 79 and May 2006 - Issue # 102, I reported about the Eastern Shore area from Cole Harbour to Ship Harbour establishing a local Joint Emergency Management Team (ES-JEM) to prepare our communities for its next catastrophic event. Over the past few years, we have experienced several significant weather events from heavy rains, floods, wind storms, hurricanes, cold snaps, snow blizzards, and extended power outages. Response to any situation is dependant on the cooperation and participation of the community at large. Planning early for any disaster will certainly go a long way to mitigating any personal or property damage. Everyone should be able to prepare themselves for a 72 hour period. Your cooperation and participation is vital to the success of any future response. The motto for ES-JEM is "Organizing to Respond". Their plan is to continue its efforts in promoting emergency preparedness training, and provide an organized approach for a coordinated response to any local emergency. The fire season is now in effect and hurricane season is fast approaching. We have to prepare ourselves for the possibility of another traumatic event. Emergency Preparedness Week is May 6th - 12th, 2007. There are many web-sites with great information for any type of emergency:

TAXATION REFORM UPDATE

Back in November 2006 - Issue #108, I reported about the HRM Taxation Reform Review. Regional Council created a Tax Reform Committee (TRC) which I have been appointed to. TRC is studying this taxing issue in greater detail. Last Autumn, HRM mailed out to everyone, an extensive information booklet about property taxes. You can find this information again at : www.halifax.ca/revenue/Howyourmunicipaltaxdollarsarespent.html. Expect to see a newer version of this booklet soon. Community involvement and citizen interaction is critical to the success of any tax reform. The TRC will be providing various opportunities for public consultation and participation. It is expected that there will be round-table discussions, presentations, questionnaires and surveys for the public to partake in. Soon there will be advertisements and public notices to inform the broader community of when, where and how you can provide us with your insights and opinions on municipal taxation. This will help to ensure that different community issues and values are identified and appropriately considered. For more details; go to this HRM Web-page: www.halifax.ca/taxreform/index.html
